The larva lives for several weeks (or years depending on species)
underwater and undergoes a series of molts as it grows. They emerge from
the water when ready to undergo a final molt where the "skin" splits to
reveal the winged adult.

Dragonflies and damselflies
can be differentiated by the way they hold their wings. The wings of
most
dragonflies are held away from, and perpendicular to, the body when at
rest. Damselflies wings are held along, and parallel to, the body when
at rest. Dragonflies are some of the fastest insects in
the world. Damselflies are usually smaller, and not as fast as
dragonflies. The eyes on a damselfly are apart; in most dragonflies the
eyes touch. Neither can walk well. They eat flies, mosquitoes, and other
small insects. They can eat many times their weight in mosquitoes every
day.
